Eagles Reportedly Sign Former Raiders 2nd Round Pick

The Philadelphia Eagles, who allowed the sixth-highest completion percentage and intercepted the fourth-fewest throws in 2020, have reinforced their secondary. Adam Schefter reported that Philadelphia “reached an agreement” with Super Bowl champion Obi Melifonwu.

Melifonwu entered free agency on April 30th when he was waived by the 49ers. The former Connecticut Husky was drafted by Oakland (56th overall) in 2017. He has played very sparingly for the Raiders (2017-18) and Patriots (2018-19). Melifonwu, a supremely athletic safety, signed with San Francisco in January. He never touched the field for the 49ers.

While Melifonwu only appeared in two games for New England, his stint as a Patriot included a Super Bowl LIII victory. Melifonwu had three tackles with the Pats.

Leading up to the 2017 draft, Melifonwu was an alluring safety prospect primarily due to his eye-popping athletic measurements. At around 6’4”, 225, Melifonwu produced a 4.40 forty-yard dash to go with a 44-inch vertical leap. That level of explosiveness makes the 27 year-old Melifonwu a worthy flier for Philadelphia.
