The 2022 college football season is still over four months away, but it’s not too early to look ahead at some of the more anticipated matchups.
ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) is a popular predictive rating system that attempts to measure team strength and forecast how teams will fare throughout the course of a season.
ESPN recently updated its FPI for 2022, and one of the metrics encompassed in the system is “matchup quality.” Below are the five games with the highest pregame matchup quality as of now.
Three of them involve Alabama, the No. 1 team in the FPI.

Clemson and Notre Dame are ranked fourth and fifth in FPI respectively, so its not a surprise to see their matchup listed here. Ohio State is ranked second, while Texas checks in at No. 6.
LSU (11th), Penn State (12th) and Ole Miss (17th) round out the teams listed in these matchups. Interestingly, Ohio State-Michigan did not crack the top five, even though the Wolverines are ranked 7th, ahead of PSU.
The full updated FPI can be found here.
