Denzel Mims showcased his potential several times during his rookie season with the New York Jets. Fast forward a year later, and the former second-round pick might be on his way out of town.
The Jets made several moves to upgrade their receiving corps this offseason, acquiring Keelan Cole, Corey Davis and Elijah Moore.
Through the first two weeks of training camp, Mims has been unable to work his way up the ladder. According to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, the Baylor product is currently sixth or seventh in the “pecking order” at wide receiver.
If things don’t improve for Mims, it’s possible the Jets will entertain a few trade calls.
“Leapfrogged on the depth chart by three offseason additions, Mims is finding his way in an offensive system that might not be suited to his skill set,” Cimini wrote, via ESPN. “If the situation doesn’t change in a month, the Jets will have a tough decision: Do they stash him on the roster and give him time to develop? Or, do they see what he might fetch in a trade?”

Jets offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur recently said that he wants Mims to stay on top of his work.
“For him, I told him the other day, ‘The more you’re on your stuff, the more opportunities you’re going to get. And the more you’re on your stuff, the more you’re going to be the Denzel Mims that we all know,’” LaFleur said. “What I’ve really liked, he’s responded a lot in the last few days. He’s had better practices.”
Mims could move up the depth chart over the course of the preseason. However, he’s running out of time to prove that he can be a game-changer in LaFleur’s offense.
