Just a few minutes ago, No. 4 Ohio State took the field for the team’s first game of the 2021 season.
It’s a Big Ten showdown against Minnesota that will has the nation’s attention as other games across the country are in weather delays. Just hours before kickoff, the Buckeyes announced they would be without 11 players – including two starters.
Just minutes into the contest, the Buckeyes nearly lost another player. With the Minnesota offense on the field, quarterback Tanner Morgan raced up the middle of the field.
As Morgan slid to the ground, Ohio State linebacker Teradja Mitchell closed in in a hurry. He lowered a hit on Morgan and was initially flagged for targeting.
Immediately after the foul call, everyone flocked to Twitter to praise the return of college football, but lament the return of the targeting rule.
Check it out.

Thankfully, the flag was overturned and Mitchell was allowed to remain in the contest.
Targeting in college football has become a very controversial topic. Officials around the country appear to use their own judgement when deciding on a targeting call, which results wildly different outcomes.
The 2021 college football season has only been here for a week but the controversial targeting calls are already here.
