NFL reporter John McClain of the Houston Chronicle had unfortunate news to break this Wednesday afternoon. Former Houston Oilers cornerback Patrick Allen has passed away this week at the age of 59.
Allen reportedly passed away in Seattle on Tuesday. His family is still waiting to find out the cause of his death.
Houston selected Allen in the fourth round of the 1984 NFL Draft, as he was an intriguing prospect out of Utah State.
During his Oilers career, Allen had seven interceptions and five fumble recoveries in 106 games. All it took was one year for him to learn the system and become a reliable starter in the secondary.
The Oilers made the playoffs four times during Allen’s seven-year stint with the franchise. He had an interception in his second career postseason game.

Allen’s brother, Anthony, also played in the NFL for several years. He suited up for Atlanta, Washington and San Diego over the course of his career, hauling in 44 receptions for 767 yards and eight touchdowns.
Anthony recently commented on the loss of his brother, saying “It’s been a struggle. As a family we’re dealing with it. A lot of people loved him. … Obviously, it’s causing a lot of pain.”
Our thoughts are with Allen’s family and friends during this difficult time.
