Full Details Emerge From The Randall Cobb Trade

July 29, 2021 by The Spun

Davante Adams and Randall Cobb celebrate.

With the end of his absence from the Green Bay Packers, Aaron Rodgers wanted the team to bring back veteran wide receiver Randall Cobb. The front office, in an effort to make things right with the legendary quarterback, is doing just that.

One of Rodgers’ public gripes with the Packers front office was the lack of input he had in moves with wide receivers, like letting long time Packers star Randall Cobb walk after 2018. That year, he was coming off of a year in which he played just nine games, catching 38 passes for 383 yards and two touchdowns.

Cobb bounced back a bit as a Dallas Cowboy the following year, going for 55/828/3. He signed with the Houston Texans to a surprisingly lucrative three-year, $27 million last year, with $18 million in guaranteed money. He struggled with the poor Texans, appearing in 10 games, going for 38/441/3.

The Packers’ decision to bring back Cobb at Rodgers’ request has gotten some blowback. The actual terms of the deal are pretty favorable for Green Bay, though. They send Houston just a sixth-round pick, and the Texans will pay $3 million of Cobb’s $8.25 million guaranteed deal for the year.

Considering the Packers seemed to need to make a Cobb deal, at least in some capacity, it’s surprising the Texans didn’t try and get more, or refuse to eat a big chunk of that guaranteed money.

Randall Cobb is owed $7.875 million next year, but his 2022 salary is not guaranteed, making it fairly easy for Green Bay to move on from him next year if they want.

In any event, Rodgers should feel good about it, Packers star Davante Adams is pumped, and overall it seems like a move that will be popular in the locker room. Cobb’s best role seems to overlap with that of rookie Amari Rodgers, but those two have a close relationship, as Rodgers’ father coached Cobb at Kentucky.

Throw in the details that Pelissero has reported, and the deal looks much better than it did a day ago.
