Jimmy Johnson Reacts To Tua Not Being A Captain

September 10, 2021 by The Spun

Just over 24 hours ago, the Miami Dolphins announced their team captains for the 2021 season.

While it was a great way to celebrate the leadership of a few players, fans noticed one specific absence. Starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was not voted as a captain by his fellow players.

Social media went wild with conspiracy theories. Some suggested he wasn’t a good leader, while others thought the Dolphins were leaving the door open for a potential Deshaun Watson trade.

However, one longtime head coach isn’t concerned. On Thursday afternoon, former NFL coach Jimmy Johnson knows a lot goes into voting for captains.

“I don’t think him not being a captain means he isn’t a good player. It just means he didn’t get the votes,” Johnson said.

Does it mean anything that Tua wasn’t named a Dolphins team captain? @JimmyJohnson joins us:

Dolphins wide receiver Mack Hollins, who was named a captain, had a message for fans as well.

“I know the question will probably come, ‘Why isn’t he a captain?’ Just because you’re a quarterback or just because you’re this doesn’t mean you have to be the captain of you have to be this,” Hollins said. “Tua’s an excellent leader, exceptional leader, and the transformation he’s made from last year to this year is incredible.

As a rookie in 2020, Tua Tagovailoa completed 64-percent of his passes. He threw for 1,814 yards and 11 touchdowns with five interceptions.

Tua and company will take the field this weekend for a battle against the New England Patriots on Sunday afternoon.
