Johnny Manziel Has Message For Texas, Oklahoma After Joining SEC

July 28, 2021 by The Spun

Former NFL quarterbacks Tony Romo and Johnny Manziel might not be on the field anymore, but they’re still competing in sports – a new sport in fact.

According to ESPN’s Tom VanHaaren, Romo and Manziel both accepted invitations to play in the upcoming Higginbotham Texas State Open. With play kicking off this week, Manziel had an opportunity to speak with reporters.

Of course, the former Texas A&M star couldn’t leave the media circle without being asked about the SEC’s newest additions. A reporter asked Manziel what he thought about Oklahoma and Texas leaving the Big 12 for the SEC.

Let’s just say he had a stern warning for the SEC newcomers.

“If they want to come to the SEC and see what it’s all about then we’ll welcome them with open arms,” he said. “But it is no cake walk and it is not the Big 12 so it should be interesting to see how things play out.”

It’s unclear when Oklahoma and Texas will make the official jump to their new conference. Both are tied to the Big 12 through the 2025 season – at least through media rights.

If they want to leave early, both will have a hefty sum to pay back to the Big 12.

For now, trash talk between Oklahoma, Texas and the SEC will have to be enough fodder for fans.
