Earlier this week, ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit recapped Michigan’s win over Rutgers while on ESPN’s College Football Podcast. In the process, Herbstreit took a subtle shot at Tennessee’s football program.
When talking about Michigan’s win, Herbstreit mentioned that Rutgers is no longer a pushover because of Greg Schiano.
Before he returned to Rutgers as the program’s football coach, Schiano nearly signed a deal with Tennessee in 2017. However, the athletic department backed out due to the fan base’s negative reaction.
Herbstreit certainly thinks the Volunteers could use Schiano as their head coach right now.
“Everyone’s excited about Michigan. They’re 4-0, they beat Rutgers,” Herbstreit said, via 247Sports “By the way, Rutgers is better than when you hear ‘Rutgers.’ They’re better than that. Schiano, another coach who is doing really good work. And to think Tennessee kicked him out of the door before they could’ve had him is crazy.”
Herbstreit has never been an analyst who shies away from saying what’s on his mind, so clearly he has some concerns about Tennessee’s decision-makers.
Josh Heupel hasn’t been bad in his first year as the head coach of the Volunteers, but the reality is Schiano has been much more impressive this year.
Rutgers currently owns a 3-1 record and should be well on its way to making a bowl game this season. The same thing cannot be said about Tennessee right now.
Now, there’s no telling if Schiano would have turned around Tennessee. That being said, we’d imagine he’d have more success than Jeremy Pruitt.
