Not surprisingly, ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit weighed in on USC’s decision to fire head coach Clay Helton earlier today.
Helton took over the reins of the Trojans during the 2015 season and after some initial success, his tenure petered out over the last few years. Last weekend’s 42-28 loss to Stanford was the final nail in the coffin.
On Twitter tonight, Herbstreit praised Helton for being “one of the good guys” in the coaching profession before admitting he was a little surprised USC fired him at this juncture of the season.
“Clay Helton is one of the good guys in the business. Every person in the industry will tell you that,” Herbstreit said. “I’m not shocked SC let him go (there have been rumors & speculation for years) guess somewhat surprised they pulled the trigger this early-let the speculation games begin!”

USC may be more than a decade removed from its glory years under Pete Carroll, but the fact remains it is still one of the more attractive jobs in college football. The Trojans are not going to have much trouble finding a high-quality replacement for Helton.
We’ll find out if they have a specific target or two in the coming days.
