Lakers Reportedly Interested In Notable Free Agency Move

June 22, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony in Game 3 of the Lakers-Blazers NBA Playoffs series.

The Los Angeles Lakers are in need of veteran wings capable of getting a bucket at any given time. Luckily for them, one will be available in upcoming free agency.

The Lakers are reportedly interested in signing the great Carmelo Anthony, per Evan Massey of NBA Analysis Network. Anthony could potentially replace Kyle Kuzma, who the Lakers are expected to trade this off-season.

“NBA Analysis Network spoke to a source that stated that the Lakers are expected to pursue Anthony in free agency,” Massey wrote. “The source mentioned that the friendship between James and Anthony would help this move come to fruition. Anthony isn’t the superstar that he once was, but he still makes a major positive impact on a game. He can shoot the three-ball at a high level and would be a much more consistent role player than Kuzma has been.”

Anthony obviously isn’t the superstar he once was. But he’s still capable of providing a major spark on the offensive end, and he’d be a big upgrade over Kuzma at wing.

Making a move for Melo would be a quality replacement for Kyle Kuzma, who the #Lakers are expected to try to trade.

The Lakers won’t be capable of offering Carmelo Anthony a lucrative one-year deal, so he’d likely have to take a pay cut. He may do so because of his relationship with LeBron James.

Anthony averaged 13.4 points per game this season. Better yet, he shot 42.1 percent from the field and 40.9 percent from three-point range. Kuzma, meanwhile, was 44.3 percent overall, but just 36.1 percent from beyond the perimeter.

Anthony is an obvious upgrade over Kuzma. But the Lakers will have to work some magic to present a worthwhile offer to the former superstar.
