Lakers Reportedly Working Out Former 1st-Round Pick This Week

September 14, 2021 by The Spun

A general view of the Los Angeles Lakers arena, featuring star Kobe Bryant playing.

As if the Lakers are in need of another veteran player: they’re reportedly bringing in an experienced forward for a workout this week.

According to Jovan Buha of The Athletic, the Lakers will work out free agent Kenneth Faried at some point this week.

Faried spent the 2019-20 season playing in a pro league in China. He had spent the prior eight years in the NBA playing for the Denver Nuggets, Brooklyn Nets and Houston Rockets. Over his NBA career, Faried has scored 11.4 points and grabbed 8.1 rebounds per game.

He’ll be the latest veteran, and somewhat random, player to workout for the Lakers.

The Lakers have room to add players. They kept a few rosters spots open ahead of training camp. Kenneth Faried could fill a vacancy if he impresses the Lakers during his workout this week.

After a stint playing in China, Faried signed with the Portland Trail Blazers’ Summer League team. He averaged 5.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game, but didn’t earn a roster spot. He’s since been a free agent.

Faried does fit in with how the Lakers utilized their big men during their 2019-20 championship run. But they don’t exactly have a need for another forward. The Lakers already have Dwight Howard and DeAndre Jordan to compliment Anthony Davis.

The Lakers have brought in plenty of players for workouts this off-season, but most have left un-signed. It’ll be interesting to see how they move forward with Faried.
