Just two seasons removed from winning an NBA championship, Frank Vogel is now unemployed. The Los Angeles Lakers, in the meantime, are seeking out his replacement. Former NBA great Lamar Odom knows who should get the job, and frankly it’s a shocking pick.
In speaking with TMZ Sports this week, Odom revealed his pick for the Lakers’ next head coach: Phil Jackson. He’s not kidding, either.
Odom believes Jackson would be a perfect fit for the Lake Show right now. He could implement the triangle offense and let LeBron James run it with Anthony Davis and Co.
It’s worth mentioning Jackson is 76 years old and hasn’t coached since 2011. But he’s an all-time great for a reason. Should the Lakers try and bring him back?
“Phil Jackson, I know can coach LeBron with the triangle offense,” Odom said, via TMZ.com. “I think that would keep [LeBron] around a little longer. Preserve him a little longer.
“I would love for Phil Jackson to be the coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. … If he was to come back and coach the Lakers, I think the Lakers would be the pick — the fan-favorite.”

Jackson was still at the top of his game when he retired. In his last season coaching in the NBA, the Lakers went 57-25 and earned the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference Playoffs. The Lakers were later swept by the Dallas Mavericks – who went on to win the championship – in the semi-finals.
It’s been over 10 years since then. The NBA has changed, the Lakers are old and their roster is a mess.
Asking a 76-year-old Jackson to return to Los Angeles would probably be a disaster.
