Lions Coach Dan Campbell Announces Star Offensive Lineman Won’t Play vs. 49ers

September 11, 2021 by The Spun

Detroit Lions offensive lineman Taylor Decker

The Detroit Lions will be a little bit short-handed on the offensive line when they take on the San Francisco 49ers this weekend.

Speaking to the media on Friday, Lions head coach Dan Campbell announced that starting left tackle Taylor Decker is out with a hand injury. Campbell seemingly indicated that Decker may be out longer than just one week.

“I would say it doesn’t look real good for this weekend,” Campbell said during his media availability.

Taylor Decker has been the Lions’ starting left tackle since going in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He has started 71 games, missing nine due to injury.

With Taylor Decker out, rookie right tackle Penei Sewell might be called on to fill the void. The 20-year-old rookie was a star at the position at Oregon, but noticeably struggled at right tackle during the preseason.

Whoever does start at left tackle will have a massive task ahead of them though. The 49ers’ top blindside pass rusher is Nick Bosa, who is starting after missing most of last season.

Bosa is only in his third year, but is quickly earning a name as one of the NFL’s elite pass rushers. He boasts 9.0 sacks, 16 tackles for loss and 26 QB hits in 18 career games.

How will losing Taylor Decker affect the Detroit Lions heading into Week 1 against the San Francisco 49ers?
