The Pittsburgh Steelers will be a bit shorthanded at linebacker to start training camp. On Wednesday, the team learned that Vince Williams is retiring from the NFL after an eight-year career.
Williams was selected by the Steelers in the sixth round of the 2013 NFL Draft. In eight years with the Steelers, he had 479 combined tackles, 50 tackles for loss, 20.5 sacks, six fumble recoveries, five passes defended and two interceptions.
Pittsburgh released Williams in March strictly because of his cap hit, but then re-signed him to a one-year contract in April.
The timing of Williams’ retirement is unfortunate since training camp is about to begin for the Steelers. That being said, he’s such a well-respected leader in the clubhouse that we’d imagine his teammates will support his decision.

Moments ago, Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert released a statement on Williams’ decision to retire.
“Vince Williams notified us today that he will retire from the game of football,” Colbert said. “We respect his decision and want to thank him for his time with us as he consistently showed great character and leadership in addition to his contributions on the field. We wish Vince and his family all the best.”
Now that Williams is done playing football, the Steelers will most likely have to start Robert Spillane opposite of Devin Bush.
