Even in his heyday as a perennial MVP candidate, Albert Pujols was never known for his speed. Maybe that’s why the 42-year-old thought he could steal third base without anyone noticing.
During Thursday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers, the St. Louis Cardinals icon took off from second base before Brandon Woodruff went home. The pitcher had ample time to step off the mound and throw a soft toss to third baseman Jace Peterson, who tagged out Pujols.
Oddly enough, this is the first time Pujols has gotten caught stealing since 2015. He’s since poached 13 bags, the last on July 30, 2021.

The future Hall of Famer clearly didn’t think Woodruff would pay any mind to him at second base. Yet even with a head start, Pujols had no chance of stealing third.
While Pujols had an embarrassing senior moment Thursday afternoon, the designated hitter celebrated his return to St. Louis by hitting his 680th career home run on Tuesday. He’s 17 long balls away from passing Alex Rodriguez for fourth place on MLB’s all-time leaderboard.
Pujols will make it to Cooperstown on his first try, but it won’t be because of his quickness.
