Georgia’s football program went 20 seasons without a national championship before defeating Alabama in last season’s College Football Playoff final. Yet Mark Ingram is still not ready to anoint the Bulldogs as a team on equal footing as his Crimson Tide.
During a Twitter Spaces session Tuesday night, the New Orleans Saints running back told Bulldogs fans to “come talk to me” when Georgia has over a decade of dominance under its belt. Furthermore, he accredited the team’s triumph to head coach Kirby Smart’s past experience at Alabama.
“The only reason that they even have a national championship is purely because their head coach came from Bama,” Ingram said. “…We’re gonna be back there again. I don’t know about them, but we’re gonna be back there again.”

Smart joined Alabama’s coaching staff as a defensive backs assistant in 2007. He was promoted to defensive coordinator the following year, Ingram’s first at the school.
In 2009, Ingram became Alabama’s first Heisman Trophy winner by tallying 1,992 total yards and 20 touchdowns. He and Smart helped guide the Crimson Tide to their first of six national championships under head coach Nick Saban.
Smart won three more in 2011, 2012, and 2015 before replacing Mark Richt as Georgia’s head coach in 2016.
Ingram seemed to make the comments playfully, but he clearly believes Alabama remains the SEC’s gold standard despite last season’s championship outcome. Smart’s squad has a long way to go before matching Saban’s success over the last 15 years.
