Look: Maryland Tweet Goes Viral After Beating West Virginia

September 5, 2021 by The Spun

Taulia Tagovailoa rolls out for Maryland football vs. Indiana.

There’s been no shortage of sports memes based off of hip hop superstar Drake’s latest album, Certified Lover Boy. No one has done it better than Maryland football.

Mike Locksley’s Terrapins scored an impressive Week 1 win this afternoon. Hosting Big 12 program West Virginia, Maryland ran out to a 30-24 victory behind 332 passing yards and three touchdowns by Taulia Tagovailoa.

The Terps outgained the Mountaineers 495-319 on the day. They also dominated the ever-important turnover battle, forcing a pair of fumbles and interception two passes.

Drake’s album cover is certainly an interesting one, featuring a set of various pregnant women emojis. We’ve seen a number of plays on it since the album dropped on Friday. Maryland football’s Twitter account had some fun with the theme, putting West Virginia helmets over the emojis, dubbing them “Certified Loser Boys.”

It’s a pretty aggressive move by the Maryland Twitter account. They don’t seem too worried about rocking the boat though.

Maryland and West Virginia are in different leagues, but have had a nice rivalry dating back to their first meeting in 1919, thanks to their proximity and regular battles in recruiting.

The two have played pretty regularly throughout the years, though this was the first matchup in the series since 2015, and Maryland’s first win since a 37-0 blowout in Baltimore back in 2013. WVU holds a tight 28-23-2 lead all-time.

Both teams take on FCS opponents next week. Maryland hosts Howard, while West Virginia will bring in LIU.
