We’re back for another round of embarrassing plays made by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Pirates are a miserable 48-86 this season and their on-field play reflects it. They’ve been particularly bad on defense, committing several errors almost each night. Pittsburgh made an error at the most inopportune time on Thursday night.
The Pirates and Cubs went to extras on Thursday tied at five apiece. Chicago had runners on first and third with one out in the bottom of the 11th when Ian Happ came to the plate.
He got under an 0-1 pitch and popped up it in the infield. As you might have guessed, the routine pop-up turned into a disaster for the Pirates. Second baseman Wilmer Difo had trouble tracking the location of the pop-up, didn’t make the catch and the Cubs’ runner on third trotted home to win the game.
It was as bad as it gets. Take a look.

Somehow, this might be the worst error the Pirates have had all season. And that’s saying something considering how bad they’ve been all year.
We’re not trying to pile on Wilmer Difo, but he had no excuse to not catch the ball. It was a routine pop-up – the kind of fly-ball little leaguers make all the time.
Sure, the pressure may have gotten to him. There was plenty at stake. But he gets paid the big bucks to play at his best in the most critical moments.
Luckily, he’ll have a chance to bounce back in a hurry when the Pirates play the Cubs Friday afternoon.
