Urban Meyer will assume his spot as the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars for the first time in the regular season later this week. Although he might be the leader on the sidelines, he’ll be getting some help from some of his players on the field.
Meyer announced the Jaguars seven team captains on Wednesday at practice, just a few days ahead of the team’s season opener against the Houston Texans. No. 1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence led the group and was joined by defensive end/linebacker Josh Allen, cornerback Shaq Griffin, linebacker Myles Jack, safety Rayshawn Jenkins, center Brandon Linder and wide receiver Marvin Jones Jr.
The Jacksonville coaching staff clear feels like the above seven players are worthy of the honor, so they decided to reveal the team’s captains in a unique way. Rather than have Meyer get up in front of the team and make the announcement, the Jaguars enlisted the help of each captain’s family and friends to deliver the news.
Allen’s wife and kids, Jack’s mother, Jenkins’s children, Griffen’s brother, Linder’s close friend, Jones’s kids and Lawrence’s wife, Marissa, all made appearances in the Jaguars announcement.

Meyer’s idea to announce his captains like this is heartfelt and surely meaningful for those that get to hear their names called. The Jaguars head coach shared that the reveal is one of his favorite traditions every year.

Now that Jacksonville had named which players will be this year’s leaders on the field, the team will turn its focus to a Week 1 match-up with the Texans. The two AFC South rivals will meet in Houston on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
