Mac Jones Reveals Why He Didn’t Keep First Touchdown Ball

September 13, 2021 by The Spun

Patriots quarterback Mac Jones on the field.

Mac Jones threw his first career NFL touchdown pass today. Both he and the New England Patriots are hoping its the first of many.

After Jones hit Nelson Agholor on a seven-yard scoring pass to put the Pats up 10-7 in the second quarter, the rookie quarterback’s teammates wanted him to get the game ball to keep as a souvenir. However, he refused.

After the game, Jones explained why he turned down the memento. His reasoning surely made his current coach Bill Belichick, and former coach Nick Saban, proud.

“It doesn’t really matter. It was one touchdown; we gotta score more,” Jones told reporters. “It’s not like the game was over right there. We’ve got to do better in the red zone, get more touchdowns and we will.”

Jones and the New England offense were driving to potentially score the winning touchdown in the final minutes when running back Damien Harris lost a fumble inside the Miami 10-yard-line. After recovering, the Dolphins ran out the final three minutes.

For the day, Jones finished 29-of-39 passing for 281 yards and one touchdown. That’s a lot to build on for the No. 15 overall pick.

He’ll look to add another milestone–first career win–when the Patriots travel to take on the Jets next Sunday.
