Three wins on the day

Men’s Tennis

Arizona State (5-1) can’t seem to lose at home this season. The Sun Devils’ 6-1 win over New Mexico State (1-3) marked their fourth straight win and protected their undefeated home record.

After securing the doubles point once again, the Sun Devils dominated the singles matches as well. The five points secured from Nathan Ponwith, Tim Ruehl, Andrea Bolla, George Stoupe and Christian Lerby all swept their matches.

The Sun Devils return to action on Friday, Feb. 19 at San Diego. They’ll then head to Texas to face TCU on Sunday, Feb. 21 in Fort Worth.

Water Polo

There was a top 25 water polo matchup in Tempe on Saturday. No. 6 Arizona State (2-0) faced off against No. 17 San Diego State (0-2) in a doubleheader.

In the first game, the Sun Devils were consistent throughout on their way to a 15-9 win. Led by Luca Petovary’s team-high five goals, Arizona State opened the first three periods with four goals in each period and added three more in the fourth. Petovary’s first goal put her team up three to start the game and they never looked back. Arizona State also took advantage of its 10 power play opportunities, as it scored on six of them.

The second game featured even more offense. Despite less power play chances, the Sun Devils scored more in a 20-9 win. Petovary once again had five goals. Amira Van Buren and Alison Cameron nearly matched her with four goals each.

Emma Fraser had five assists between the two games. Protecting the goal, Itzahiana Baca had five saves in the first game and Chelsea Karimazondo followed with seven in the second game.

The two teams play again on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. MT.
