The first half of Monday night’s game between Louisville and Ole Miss was dominated by targeting calls. Things got so out of hand that Mike Golic criticized the current state of college football.
“Ole Miss player got tossed for targeting, by rule it was, for safety reasons you need to see what you hit, he did lead with top of helmet..but stop stop stop ejecting them, 15yd penalty and play on, or at make it 2 targeting and you’re ejected, like 2 techs in BB. Just my opinion,” Golic tweeted.
Several media members called out college football’s targeting rules during last night’s game for the same exact reason. They’re tired of players constantly being ejected for hits that weren’t intentional.
Fans are also tired of seeing impact players ejected for a hit that wasn’t nearly as bad as it looked. Let’s also not forget that every review takes up time and slows down the pace of the game.

Golic wasn’t the only major college football analyst who had a blunt message for the sport. On Saturday afternoon, Joel Klatt of Fox Sports had something similar to say about college football’s targeting issue.
“The guy is not out there head-hunting, he’s playing fast,” Klatt said. “It’s a violent sport. This is a good player, a really good player. He’s the heart and soul of this defense right now. He shouldn’t be ejected from the game. If you want to throw a flag, throw a flag. We got to fix this in college football.”
Hopefully, college football can find a solution to promote player safety without constantly ejecting players for collisions they can’t avoid.
