After an injury derailed his 2020 campaign, Dak Prescott is set to return to the Dallas Cowboys for training camp. But what expectations does head coach Mike McCarthy have on his franchise quarterback?
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, McCarthy said that judging from what he’s heard from the team’s medical staff, he expects Prescott to be a full participant in training camp. He said that the team will continue to monitor him until then and made it clear that it’s just a projection – not a firm statement.
“Unless something comes out of the medical meeting, I see for him to be a full participant,” McCarthy said, via ProFootballTalk. “But it’s still a projection, and we’ll see how it goes. We will watch him. But the way we approached the offseason program was to keep him out of the team drills, but he will participate in the team drills. That was really the last hurdle as I view it.”
Prescott is coming off a serious leg and foot injury that ended his season in the fifth week of the season. He suffered a compound fracture and dislocation to his right ankle that required surgery that very night.

But before getting injured, Dak Prescott was on pace to have one of the best seasons of his career. He was completing 68-percent of his passes while averaging 371 yards and 7.72 net yards gained per pass attempt – all career highs.
Unfortunately, the Cowboys offense was practically anemic without him. The combined efforts of Andy Dalton, Ben DiNucci and Garrett Gilbert netted just four wins as the Cowboys finished 6-10.
If Dak Prescott can return to form, the Cowboys should be NFC East contenders this coming season.
So it makes sense that Mike McCarthy will exercise plenty of caution with Prescott. The team’s season – a possibly his job – may depend on it.
