With Ben Roethlisberger maintaining a firm hold on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ starting QB job, Mike Tomlin is overseeing a battle for the backup job between Dwayne Haskins and Mason Rudolph. So what does he make of the competition so far?
Speaking to the media after last night’s 16-3 Hall of Fame Game win over the Dallas Cowboys, Tomlin complimented both quarterbacks on their clock management. But as for whether one had particularly stood out, all the Steelers head coach would say is, “Keep watching.”
“I thought they did a nice job, particularly from a play clock standpoint,” Tomlin said. “New verbiage and things of that nature. First time in the stadium with a real play clock. It’s difficult for us to simulate in practice settings. I thought they did a nice job managing some of those things, but largely, I thought all of their performances were positive.”
The two quarterbacks split reps in last night’s 16-3 Hall of Fame Game win over the Dallas Cowboys. Rudolph went 6-9 for 84 yards and lost a fumble. Haskins went 8-13 for 54 yards.

Mason Rudolph has been the Steelers’ primary backup for the past two years. He’s 5-4 as a starter with 15 touchdowns and a 61-percent completion rate.
Dwayne Haskins joined the Steelers on a reserve/future contract in January after being cut by the Washington Football Team midseason. He’s a former first-round pick, but has struggled to make an impact on the field.
The Steelers have Super Bowl aspirations this year as it may be Ben Roethlisberger’s last season. Having a quality backup in place in the event Big Ben gets injured is essential.
