It’s never a good sign if your starting quarterback and head coach have a contentious relationship, but that seems to be exactly what’s happening in Minnesota.
Just last month, Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer publicly expressed his frustrations with starting QB Kirk Cousins for his decision to refuse the COVID-19 vaccine. More recently, the Minnesota coach criticized his quarterback’s tendency to settle for check-downs instead of pushing the ball downfield.
At Cousins’ request, Zimmer reportedly watched film with the 10th-year QB on Thursday. During a press conference this afternoon, the coach was asked if he thinks Cousins wants more autonomy in the offense.
In his response, he seemed to take yet another shot at his veteran QB.
“I think he does, yeah. I think he’s got opinions on a lot of things,” Zimmer said, per Vikings insider Courtney Cronin.
Zimmer said he watched film with Kirk Cousins for 1st time today at the request of the QB. I asked Zimmer whether Cousins, entering Year 10 (7 as a starter), wants more autonomy in the offense: “I think he does, yeah. I think he’s got opinions on a lot of things, yeah.”

This conflict doesn’t exactly bode well for the Minnesota offense or the Vikings locker room as a whole moving forward.
After failing to make the playoffs with a 7-9 record last season, Zimmer and Cousins’ futures with the organization are likely both on the line if they don’t enjoy some postseason success in 2021.
