According to the latest reports, the San Diego Padres are on the verge of acquiring three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer from the Washington Nationals.
Scherzer, who is a free agent at the end of the season, pitched in his final game for the Nats this afternoon. Now, he’s likely heading West, with the Padres reportedly close to closing the deal.
It’s not over yet, but San Diego is the clear leader for the durable righthander. Over the last 18 months, the Padres have not been shy about spending money and adding talent, and a move like this could put them over the top as they try to rally past the Dodgers and Giants in the NL West.
Assuming San Diego makes the postseason, Scherzer will anchor a rotation that also includes Blake Snell, Joe Musgrove and Yu Darvish.
Padres are working hard to try to reach agreement on a Scherzer deal with Nats. They may be in the lead but no sense the Dodgers or others are out yet. Also very important; in the end, while Scherzer will consider these finalists, with full veto rights, he can call the shot.

Once Scherzer is dealt somewhere (presumably San Diego), Minnesota Twins ace Jose Berrios will officially become the biggest name still available on the starting pitching market. According to reports, interest in Berrios has heated up in the last few hours.
The MLB trade deadline is tomorrow at 4 p.m. ET.
