Myles Garrett Responds To Player Of The Year Talk

July 29, 2021 by The Spun

Myles Garrett walks off the field.

Seven weeks into the 2020 season, Defensive Player of the Year was Myles Garrett’s award to lose. Garrett logged nine sacks and forced four fumbles in Cleveland’s first seven games.

But midway through the year, Garrett contracted COVID. He returned after two missed games but wasn’t quite himself for the remainder of the season.

After a full offseason, Garrett is back at the peak of his powers. Bookies.com gives the Browns’ defensive end the second-best odds to win DPOY at +600.

The Rams’ Aaron Donald (+400) is the favorite. And while Garrett appreciates the respect–and would love to take home the award–he claims to be more focused on team goals.

“Got a lot of guys who can win [DPOY], who have the ability, the talent, so I’ll be competing against them,” Garrett told Cleveland.com Wednesday. “Most of all, I’m just trying to help my team win, so whatever they ask me to do, they call for me to do, I’m going to do that and make the plays that I’m supposed to make.”

Garrett’s 2019 was cut short by a six-game suspension and last year he was hindered by COVID. In order to reach his objectives––both team and individual––Garrett will need to stay on the field. But all signs point to a vintage year for the 2017 first overall draft pick.
