NBA Insider Suggests Kyrie Irving “Could Retire” If Traded By Nets

October 9, 2021 by The Spun

Kyrie Irving dribbling for the Nets.

Kyrie Irving’s availability for the 2021-22 season has been the biggest storyline in the NBA over the past few weeks.

The Brooklyn Nets learned on Friday that Irving will be allowed to practice at the team’s facility, but he still won’t be able to play in home games at the Barclays Center due to New York’s current COVID-19 vaccine mandate.

Nets head coach Steve Nash views the recent news involving Irving as a positive, of course. However, the team is still unsure if the All-Star point guard will receive the COVID-19 vaccine in time for their home opener.

With so much uncertainty surrounding Irving’s status right now, the Nets could potentially think about moving him. That being said, any trade involving Irving could spell the end of his NBA career.

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, there’s some belief around the league that Irving could retire, or strong consider it, if he’s traded by the Nets.

Irving has been mentioned in a potential swap for Philadelphia 76ers star Ben Simmons. Those talks haven’t really gone anywhere at this time.

Brooklyn signed Irving in 2019 with the intention that he’d help lead the franchise to an NBA Finals. While that is still possible, the reality is he has missed a lot of time on the court due to various reasons.

NBA fans will want to monitor Irving’s situation for the next few weeks.
