New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole left in tonight’s matchup against the Toronto Blue Jays with left hamstring tightness, per the team.
Cole had already allowed three runs (including a solo home run to Alejandro Kirk in the second inning) before calling for relief midway through the fourth.
The four-time All Star pointed to the dugout after allowing a sacrifice fly to Reese McGuire that gave Toronto a 3-1 lead.

Heading into tonight’s game, Cole had notched a 14-6 starting record (leading league in wins) with a 2.73 ERA on a league-leading 215 strikeouts. Through 3.2 innings before his departure tonight, he added two more strikeouts and two walks.
This news is tough for the Yankees, who currently find themselves in the hunt for a playoff berth — especially with their star pitcher coming off his best start of the season just last week. On Wednesday, Cole logged an outstanding 15-strikeout win over the Los Angeles Angeles.

New York currently sit in second place in the AL East with a 78-59 record — 8.5 games back from the Tampa Bay Rays in first.
After Cole’s departure from the game, he was replaced by reliever Albert Abreu. The Yankees currently trail the Blue Jays 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth.
