Now more than a week after his release from the New England Patriots, Cam Newton still hasn’t found a new NFL team.
That fact isn’t supposed to change anytime soon. According to NFL insider Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk, no team has given the former league MVP “any serious consideration” as a potential backup option.
Newton himself has made it very clear that he doesn’t intend for this to be the end of his NFL career — but his next landing spot is now out of his control.
During a YouTube Live video on Friday, the former Pats starter revealed that he was “absolutely” surprised when New England released him earlier this month. He said he would’ve gladly accepted a backup role behind Mac Jones, but that the rookie QB1 would’ve been “uncomfortable” with him on the sidelines.
This idea could be a reason why Newton is struggling to find a new home.
Throughout his NFL career, the 32-year-old veteran with a larger-than-life personality has always been “the guy” on his team. If he were to be picked up by a new organization, it would likely be as a backup option for a young QB — a situation Newton is certainly not accustomed to.
With Week 1 of the NFL season already underway, it seems as though every team already has their set QB depth charts. It’s looking like Newton’s best chance to land a roster spot is if a team has a sudden need at the quarterback position.
As an unvaccinated player, Newton would have to quarantine for five days before joining a new team — diminishing his value as a quick fix for desperate teams.
