The Dallas Cowboys open the entire 2021 NFL season in less than a week. They head to Florida to face the Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and as many hoped, they will have Dak Prescott ready to go.
Prescott was on pace for a historic statistical season when his year was abruptly cut short. He suffered a gruesome ankle injury that required multiple surgeries, and cost him the balance of his fall.
He was back in action this summer, but a mysterious shoulder issue sidelined him once again. The Cowboys insisted that they were taking precautions by not having him participate in practice, but given the severity of the previous injury, many understandably wondered if he’d truly be ready to open the season. Luckily, those fears are set to be assuaged next Thursday.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport confirms that Dak Prescott will be “full-go” for Week 1 against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. If he looks the way he did in early 2020, we could be in for a real shootout to open the NFL season.

“This is a big deal for the Dallas Cowboys. Considering the panic that occurred when Dak Prescott first walked off the field and told the trainers that his shoulder, his side was hurting just a little bit, and everybody wondered was Dak really going to be 100-percent full speed, full-go for the opener,” Rapoport told NFL Network today. “There were really some weeks there where he wasn’t throwing, you didn’t see him doing much except watching practice and you wondered ‘What are the Cowboys not telling us? Is this real? How is Dak?’ Dak is fine, and the fact that he’s going to be back to his old self for the opener is important.
“Two ankle surgeries, one kind of arm/shoulder injury, but still he’s back where the Cowboys need him, ready for the opener.”
The Cowboys and Buccaneers open the season on Thursday, Sept. 9 at 8:20 p.m. ET. NBC will broadcast the game.
