NFL Team Reportedly Fires Its College Scouting Director

Just two days after completing the 2022 NFL Draft, the New York Giants fired their director of college scouting.

According to NJ Advanced Media’s Zack Rosenblatt, the Giants are parting ways with Chris Pettit, who entered the role in 2018.

The Giants started his tenure in controversial fashion by selecting running back Saquon Barkley with the No. 2 pick. However, this year’s top picks drew far better reviews.

New York secured major difference-makers on both sides of the ball by selecting Oregon defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux with the No. 5 pick and Alabama offensive tackle Evan Neal at No. 7.

First-year general manager Joe Schoen nevertheless decided to dismiss Pettit after watching his new scouting department operate. It’s possible that Pettit did not hold much influence at all in New York’s selections this year if Schoen had already decided he wanted to move on from him.

Formerly an offensive coordinator at Long Island’s Huntington High School, Pettit joined the Giants as a scouting intern in 2004 before getting hired to their staff the following year. He spent 13 years as a team scout before receiving a promotion to head their operations.

Next year’s draft could prove a pivotal turning point for the franchise. The Giants declined Daniel Jones’ fifth-year option, so they’d likely seek a new quarterback if recording six wins or fewer for the sixth consecutive season. Bryce Young and CJ Stroud are projected to headline a superior 2023 class.
