NFL World Reacts To Cam Newton’s Wednesday Message

September 9, 2021 by The Spun

New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton looks down the field.

Since his release from the New England Patriots last week, it’s been all quiet from Cam Newton. That was until he released a message on his Instagram Wednesday afternoon.

“I have a lot of things that I need to get off my chest,” Newton said of a video he plans on posting Friday. “This is not a retirement speech, and I have a lot of football still in me.”

After being dubbed as the Patriots’ QB1 throughout most of the offseason/preseason, Newton was beat out by rookie quarterback Mac Jones in this year’s hotly-contested QB battle.

Since his release, no NFL teams have showed any real interest in acquiring Newton — even as a backup option.

The NFL world took to Twitter on Wednesday to react to this vague message from the former league MVP.

Gotta put that pride to the side & be a backup for a year https://t.co/YA1paGbd55

Newton is coming off a disappointing first (and only) season with the Patriots in 2020, logging eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions en route to a 7-8 record — the Patriots’ first losing record since 2000.

The starting situation seemed to flip in New England after Newton missed time with a missed COVID-19 test late in the preseason — leading many to question if his vaccination status played a role in his release.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick says that wasn’t the case. He also spoke highly of Newton’s time in New England.

“I have nothing but positive thoughts and feelings for Cam,” Belichick said on 93.7 WEEI-FM. “He came in here, he worked hard, and gave us everything he had. Right now, our future is going to be Mac at quarterback. So that’s where we’re going to go.”

Despite multiple NFL teams with shaky at-best backup QB rosters, the former superstar still doesn’t have a new home.

Newton will likely address that and more in Friday’s scheduled video post.
