Last year, the 49ers‘ season crumbled in Week 2 when they lost several key players to season-ending injuries. Unfortunately, something similar occurred in San Francisco’s 2021 season opener versus Detroit on Sunday.
Two 49ers’ starters – running back Raheem Mostert and defensive back Jason Verrett – left the Lions game on Sunday with injuries. Kyle Shanahan provided updates on both during his press conference on Monday. He didn’t have good news to share.
Mostert is heading to the injured reserve where he’ll be for at least the next eight weeks. The star running back is dealing with a knee injury. Verrett, meanwhile, is out for the season after suffering a torn ACL.
They’re not the only 49ers players dealing with injuries, either. Take a look.
#49ers injuries:
* CB Jason Verrett (ACL) out for season
* RB Raheem Mostert (knee) to IR for approx. 8 weeks
* LB Dre Greenlaw (groin) day to day
* DE Dee Ford (ankle) should play vs. PHI
* LB Marcell Harris (oblique) should play vs. PHI— Matt Barrows (@mattbarrows) September 13, 2021
Yes, the 49ers started the season with a win. But it’s never a good thing when a victory comes at such a major cost.
The 49ers just don’t have the best injury luck as of late.
“The amount of significant injuries to starters that the 49ers sustain is truly hard to believe,” one fan said. “Year after year.”
“Ugh. What is it about the #49ers that makes the team more injury prone than other teams … year after year?? At this point, the issue is worth scientific study,” another fan said.
Take a look at what the rest of the NFL world has to say about the 49ers’ latest injury news.

At some point the 49ers medical staff has to answer some questions. It’s a rotating list of injuries every single week.

Have to feel for #49ers‘ RB Raheem Mostert.
Missed 8 games last season with injuries, will miss another 8 weeks this season with a knee injury. Missed 7 games in 2018.
Such a fantastic player, who’s been limited because of injuries.

Fortunately for San Francisco, it has decent depth at running back.
In Mostert’s absence, rookie Eli Mitchell carried the rock 19 times for 104 yards and a touchdown against the Lions. The 49ers also have JaMycal Hasty and Trey Sermon at the position.
The 49ers’ secondary is a major concern at the moment, though. It may be worth giving Richard Shermon a call at this point.
