Cam Newton has never been afraid to speak his mind. So when he was released from the New England Patriots, it was only a matter of time before he opened up about it.
In a new video on his YouTube channel, Newton wasn’t pleased about being released from the team outright. While he said that he wouldn’t have minded being the team’s backup, he also asserted that rookie quarterback Mac Jones would have been “uncomfortable” with him on the roster as the backup after being named the starter.
Naturally, Newton is getting a lot of pushback for his comments. Many people are accusing him of throwing Jones under the bus with some of his comments.
The video itself has 60,000 views in just a few hours with many offering support in the comments section. But fans are being a lot more harsh on Twitter:
Cam could’ve taken the “high road” and been a support system for a young player trying to make his way in the league, but instead he throws him under the bus. This won’t help him get signed or trusted by another locker room.

Mac waited 3 years to take over the throne at Bama without an ounce of complaining and went out and put up one of the best seasons in college history. Dude is a consummate professional and does nothing but win. Good luck in your next endevour Cam but we good with Mac.

This is probably true whether Mac or the Pats want to admit it. It comes off as sour grapes because it’s from the guy who got released, but it’s tough for a kid to feel like he can take risks and make mistakes to learn and develop with a former MVP behind him on the depth chart.

I don’t think Mac would be uncomfortable knowing he’s starting above a former MVP

Cam Newton was the New England Patriots’ starter in 2020, going 7-8 while completing 65.8-percent of his passes. But the Patriots’ offense struggled at times as Newton struggled to move the football through the air.
The end result was a 7-9 season – the first losing season for the Patriots since 2000 – Bill Belichick’s first season with the team.
As for Newton, he is now a free agent but may struggle to find a team to call his own this season. Between his struggles last year, his age and injury history, a starting job – or even a backup job – may be hard to come by.
What are your thoughts on Newton’s comments about the Patriots today?
