Ohio State’s Meechie Johnson Announces Transfer Commitment

Former Ohio State guard Meechie Johnson Jr. announced his transfer to South Carolina on Monday.

Two weeks after entering the transfer portal, Johnson declared that he’s playing for the Gamecocks next season. His Twitter post includes a video of the Cleveland native wearing his new uniform.

Johnson averaged 4.4 points in 26 games played for the Buckeyes last season, logging 17.7 minutes per contest in a predominantly bench role. He shot 31.9 percent from the floor in 43 career games with Ohio State.

The Buckeyes are now expected to bring back just five players from last year’s squad, but they’ve already started replenishing their roster. Along with welcoming incoming freshmen Bruce Thornton, Roddy Gayle Jr., and Bowen Hardman, they poached transfer guards Tanner Holden from Wright State and Sean McNeil from West Virginia.

Johnson will instead join a retooling South Carolina program that hired Chattanooga’s Lamont Paris to replace Frank Martin after 10 seasons as head coach. The Gamecocks, who went 18-13 last season, haven’t made the NCAA tournament since 2017.

According to Steve Helwagen of 247Sports, Johnson picked South Carolina over LSU, DePaul, and Pittsburgh after visiting the Columbia campus last Tuesday and Wednesday.
