College football teams are usually pretty quick to dismiss rumors when it comes to their status within their own conference. That’s what makes Oklahoma’s reaction to the latest news about them potentially joining the SEC all the more fascinating.
According to Yahoo Sports college football insider Pete Thamel, Oklahoma issued a statement that was not a firm denial of the reports that they’re seeking entry into the SEC. Rather, the school said that the landscape of college sports is “shifting constantly” and that they don’t address every rumor.
“The college athletics landscape is shifting constantly,” Oklahoma said in a statement. “We don’t address every anonymous rumor.”
While that might seem like a denial, Thamel noted that the statement doesn’t include any mention of the Big 12 Conference. Given that they’re the entity would would suffer the most from an Oklahoma departure, that seems like a pretty big thing to leave out of a statement.
Just got a statement from Oklahoma. There’s no denial in this, as it fails to mention the Big 12. “The college athletics landscape is shifting constantly. We don’t address every anonymous rumor.”

Oklahoma as well as their Red River rivals, the Texas Longhorns, are both reportedly seeking to move from the Big 12 to the SEC. Such a move would alter the entire landscape of college football – and possibly kill the Big 12.
Many believe that Oklahoma would be an ideal fit for the SEC. Between their history against some of the SEC’s current members and their powerful recruiting apparatus, they might fit in like a glove.
And with the College Football Playoff expanding, they wouldn’t be limited to just the Big 12 Championship as their sole path to national title glory.
Would Oklahoma be a good fit for the SEC?
