The Green Bay Packers lit up opposing defenses last year en route to a second-straight NFC Championship. Aaron Rodgers won the MVP award, elevating a group of wide receivers that didn’t jump off the page entering the season.
Davante Adams was already a star, and Rodgers’ favorite target. Last year, he made his case to be considered the best wide receiver in football, catching 115 passes for 1,374 yards and 18 touchdowns.
The lesser-known Packers receivers helped both surge last year. Marquez Valdes-Scantling proved to be a dangerous deep threat, even with some questions about his hands, while Allen Lazard was a very reliable possession receiver. Robert Tonyan became a red zone monster at tight end. This year, the team adds veteran Randall Cobb back at Aaron Rodgers’ behest, and the team drafted Clemson’s Amari Rodgers, a dangerous new weapon for the team.
Valdes-Scantling didn’t mince words when asked about the receiving corps this fall. He doesn’t see a defense that can defend the Packers wide receivers, unless they can get after Rodgers with a dominant pass rush.
How do you defend #Packers receivers? Marquez Valdes-Scantling doesn’t see that happening. A pretty confident MVS here. pic.twitter.com/03gWKxf8Lp

MVS was second on the team with 690 yards, and posted a team high 20.9 yards per reception, finding the end zone six times. Tonyan went for 52/586/11, while Lazard posted a 33/451/3 season in 10 games.
We have seen the pass rush get to Rodgers in years past, though. This year, the Packers will start the season without one of the NFL’s best left tackles in David Bakhtiari.
If they can keep the MVP upright, though, there is reason to believe this young receiving corps can take another step forward this fall, which is a scary notion.
