That golfer Patrick Reed was even able to participate in the first round of the Tour Championship today is somewhat of a miracle, considering where he was less than two weeks ago.
Reed missed the BMW Championship due to being hospitalized with double pneumonia that reportedly “got really bad very quickly.” Reed, who said his illness was COVID-19 despite being vaccinated, spent nearly a week in the hospital.
After finishing his first round today at +2, Reed spoke candidly with reporters, telling them that his prognosis was so grim that at one point, doctors said he could die.
“First couple days they were sitting there telling me that make sure you text your family quite a bit, talk to your family, because you just don’t know,” Reed said. “I mean, this is not good. We’re not in a good spot right now.”

It’s jarring to hear Reed be that frank about how seriously ill he was. Thankfully, things did not take a turn for the worse.
The 31-year-old golfer shot a 72 today, which leaves him well off the pace on both the FedEx Cup and Official World Golf Ranking leaderboards.
Then again, given his recent health scare, Reed will gladly take just being able to be back on the course at this point.
