Since coming out as gay earlier this week, Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Carl Nassib has been receiving support and applause from people in all walks of life across the country. Joining the chorus on Wednesday was President Joe Biden.
On Tuesday, President Biden issued a statement praising Nassib and Washington Spirit forward Kumi Yokoyama, who came out as transgender this month, for their courage and inspiration. He said that their bravery will allow “countless kids” to see themselves in a new light thanks to them.
“To Carl Nassib and Kumi Yokoyama – two prominent, inspiring athletes who came out this week: I’m so proud of your courage,” President Biden said. “Because of you, countless kids around the world are seeing themselves in a new light today.”
President Biden joins NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, Raiders owner Mark Davis and Raiders head coach Jon Gruden in celebrating Nassib for coming out. When Nassib takes the field this September, he will be the first active player in NFL history to play a down in the regular season.

While Carl Nassib has not yet publicly responded to President Biden’s message, Kumi Yokoyama has.
Taking to Twitter last night, she thanked the President and added a set of crying emojis to her response.
Thank you so much 😭😭😭 https://t.co/Sx088EURck

Their coming out comes on the heels of New Zealand allowing a transgender woman to join their weightlifting team for the Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
PRIDE 2021 may go down as an especially historic one when all is said and done.
