Ravens Are Reportedly Signing Veteran Running Back

September 10, 2021 by The Spun

A general view of the Ravens stadium.

With Week 1 of the 2021 NFL season yet to kickoff, the Baltimore Ravens have already suffered several devastating injuries — most notably on the backfield depth chart.

After losing J.K. Dobbins and Justice Hill to season ending injuries earlier this preseason, fourth-year running back Gus Edwards was set to take the vast majority of snaps this coming season. But, during Thursday’s practice, Edwards reportedly suffered what the team thinks could be a season-ending ACL tear.

As of right now, the Ravens only have two healthy running backs on their active roster: Ty’Son Williams and Trenton Cannon.

To combat this lack of depth, Baltimore reportedly signed veteran running back Devonta Freeman to its practice squad with the intention of elevating him to the active roster, per ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter.

Ravens now are signing veteran free-agent RB Devonta Freeman to their practice squad, per his agent @DrewJRosenhaus. The idea is that Freeman will be promoted to Ravens’ active roster.

Freeman, a former two-time Pro Bowler, saw time in just five contests with the New York Giants this past season. Through that time, the 29-year-old running back logged 172 yards and one touchdown on 54 carries.

Just yesterday, the Ravens signed another former star RB in Le’Veon Bell. With this recent injury for Edwards, the two-time All Pro’s chances of being elevated to the active roster have jumped significantly.

Fortunately for Baltimore, the team will have a little bit of extra time to sort out this situation as they face off against the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday night.
