Report: Giants Are Re-Signing Longtime Special Teamer

September 8, 2021 by The Spun

A general view of MetLife Stadium during a Giants game.

Nate Ebner was a special teams stalwart with the New England Patriots, so it shouldn’t be too surprising he’s carried that over with the New York Giants.

Ebner re-signed with the Giants today, five days before the season opener. He spent this summer rehabbing an injury, but head coach Joe Judge, Ebner’s special teams coordinator in New England, made it known that he intended to bring the 32-year-old back if he was healthy enough to play.

Ebner played in all 16 games for the Giants in 2020, leading the team in special teams snaps with 332. He recorded eight total tackles, and also added a pass defensed in limited defensive duty.

Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post first reported news of Ebner’s signing. Dunleavy adds that wide receiver C.J. Board will be cut in a corresponding move.

The Giants are planning on bringing Board back on the team’s practice squad.

Also hearing the corresponding #Giants roster move is WR C.J. Board will be cut and re-signed to the practice squad, taking someone else’s spot there. As we saw last week, Board doesn’t have to clear waivers. https://t.co/DyoYrIDDtt

A standout rugby player who had hoped to compete at this year’s Olympics before getting injured, Ebner should once again be a key contributor on special teams for Big Blue in 2021.

The team is likely hoping he doesn’t have to be used as much on defense though. Ebner’s 39 snaps in 2020 were the most he played in five years.
