Earlier this month, Notre Dame announced a significant departure from the football program’s past.
Over the past few years, more football programs have been scheduling games against HBCU programs. However, Notre Dame strayed away from those in the past – until now.
The Fighting Irish will face off against Tennessee State – led by former college football and NFL star Eddie George. On Thursday afternoon, the football world learned just how much Notre Dame was paying for the game.
Here’s more from the Tennesseean:
Notre Dame football will pay Tennessee State a $1 million guarantee when the Tigers visit South Bend for the 2023 season opener for both teams.
The Sept. 2 nationally televised game was announced on April 5. The guarantee is the largest ever for TSU. Contract details were obtained through a freedom of information request by The Tennessean.
While some fans are excited about the upcoming contest, former Notre Dame star quarterback Brady Quinn was not pleased.
“You can’t schedule this and go, ‘Well, it’s historic for this reason.’ I get all that. I don’t care about that,” Quinn said, via Fox Sports Radio. “This isn’t about equity and all that stuff or trying to say hey, we’re helping out an HBCU school. It’s not about that. It’s about trying to win a National Championship…
“This a no win scenario for Notre Dame, no matter what way you go about it. It does not help elevate their program. You’re not winning a recruit for this. You’re not winning in the eyes of the College Football Playoff Committee, or the AP, or whatever else want to talk about recruiting.”
Notre Dame and Tennessee State face off on September 2.
