Report: JT Daniels’ Status For Week 2 Is In Doubt

September 9, 2021 by The Spun

Georgia quarterback JT Daniels on the field.

The Georgia Bulldogs scored a high-profile victory in Week 1 over Clemson this past weekend thanks to stellar defensive performance. Although Kirby Smart’s program might’ve escaped with a win, it didn’t get out completely unscathed.

According to Jake Rowe of 247Sports, Georgia starting quarterback JT Daniels is dealing with an injury to his core, most likely his ribs or oblique. It’s unclear exactly when he suffered the injury, but it may keep him out of the Bulldogs home opener this weekend against UAB.

Rowe indicated that whatever is ailing Daniels isn’t long-term but that he is considered day-to-day for the time being. He practiced on Monday, but did not get much work in on Tuesday.

Redshirt freshman Carson Beck took a “large portion” of the first-team reps at practice on Tuesday and would be in line to start if Daniels can’t play come Saturday.

Daniels wasn’t perfect, but managed the defensive struggle between Georgia and Clemson well. He ended the game 22-for-30 for 143 yards and an interception. He limited his mistakes and ultimately put his team in position to win.

Since he’s taken over the starting job at Georgia, Daniels has shown a knack for doing whatever it takes to put the Bulldogs on top. He’s started the last five games for the program dating back to last year and has gone 5-0 during that span. That run included wins over Mississippi State, South Carolina, Missouri, Cincinnati and of course, Clemson.

In his four starts last year, Daniels averaged over 307 passing yards per game and threw 10 touchdowns compared to just two interceptions.

Georgia has high hopes about what the USC transfer can accomplish this year in Athens, but that will only be the case if he can stay healthy. The Bulldogs won’t be in trouble without Daniels this week against UAB, but will need him later in the year against tougher competition.
