After a flurry of drama surrounding quarterback Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals earlier this offseason, it seemed like things had died down between the two sides.
On Thursday, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that the Cardinals have not made Murray another offer for a contract extension. Pelissero wrote that Arizona “insists” they won’t trade Murray, but also said he doesn’t see the former No. 1 pick playing the 2022 season without a new deal.
According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, if a contract offer doesn’t materialize quickly, things could get very interesting. Breer tweeted that Murray and his camp “have long viewed” the upcoming NFL Draft as a deadline for a new proposal.
“Cardinals QB Kyler Murray and his camp have long viewed the draft as a deadline for a new contract—we talked about this back in March—because if they were going to ask for a trade, they’d wanna do it before then,” Breer said. “Putting the ball in AZ’s court is the next step in that direction.”

The 2022 NFL Draft begins two weeks from tonight. That means the Cardinals will have to send Murray an offer soon, or risk the two-time Pro Bowler potentially asking for trade.
This offseason has already had a ton of fireworks, and we haven’t even made it to the draft yet. A young, talented quarterback like Murray hitting the trading block would certainly qualify as more sparks flying.
Stay tuned.
