Just over 24 hours ago, one of the most attractive jobs in college football opened when USC announced it parted ways with head coach Clay Helton.
Every time a job like USC opens, big-name coaches have their names tossed in the ring as a potential successor. Whether there’s an actual connection or just an agent doing his best for his client, plenty of names have already been tossed around.
Penn State’s James Franklin, Cincinnati’s Luke Fickell and Oregon’s Mario Cristobal were all named as potential replacements for Helton. However, ESPN’s Adam Schefter thinks a current NFL coach is in the mix as well.
No, it’s not Urban Meyer this time. Instead, Schefter suggested Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy could become a candidate.
“League sources believe Chiefs’ OC Eric Bieniemy will emerge as a head-coaching candidate for USC,” Schefter said. “Bieniemy is from Southern California and has told confidantes in the past, that USC is one of the only college jobs that might interest him.”

Bieniemy seems to be in line for a head coaching gig in the NFL next season. However, he’s been in line for a head coaching gig in the NFL for the past two seasons and no team has hired him just yet.
Perhaps a jump to USC would finally give him the chance to be a head coach for the first time in his career.
Would he leave the NFL for USC?
