Stidham was selected by the Patriots with a fourth-round draft pick in 2019. Through his first NFL seasons, the former Auburn Tiger has had the privilege of playing behind two former league MVPs: Tom Brady in 2019 and Cam Newton in 2020.
In his second season with New England, Stidham saw time in five games — logging 256 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions.
Despite his struggles in 2020, the Pats backup was looking to participate in a heated QB battle prior to the 2021 season. With Newton returning on a one-year contract, No. 15 overall rookie Mac Jones incoming and veteran Brian Hoyer rejoining the ranks, Stidham was in for a tough challenge in this year’s training camp.
Unfortunately, this shoulder injury means the 24-year-old QB won’t be able to show his stuff in Year 3 — at least not for a while.
With Stidham not expected to return anytime soon, the Patriots claimed former practice squad quarterback Jake Dolegala off waivers on Wednesday.
As of right now, Newton is expected to reclaim the QB1 role at the start of the season. But, an impressive training camp performance from Jones could change that.
