Veteran cornerback Richard Sherman is one of the most brash players in the NFL, especially when at the top of his game. He’s also a very respected player, as evidenced by Tom Brady reaching out personally as Sherman weighed his options.
“You better come or you’re going to regret not coming,” Sherman recounts Brady telling him. He said it was his best opportunity to win a Super Bowl, which is hard to deny given the evidence.
Sherman lost most of his 2020 season—his final year with the San Francisco 49ers—to a calf injury. After a tumultuous offseason, which included an arrest over a situation at his in-laws home, he had to wait a few weeks before the Tampa Bay Buccaneers came calling. Brady reportedly reached out after the defense struggled against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1’s 31-29 win.
On Wednesday night, Sherman posted a hilarious photoshop of an old photo from when he and Brady were on the Seahawks and Patriots, respectively. He’s shown shouting at the quarterback, a picture which many turned into a “you mad bro?” meme. In the new version, both are in Buccaneers jerseys.
“We’ve come a long way,” Sherman captioned the picture.

That picture is from back in 2012. In discussing his decision to sign with Tampa on his podcast, Richard Sherman admitted that he and Brady “had their history” earlier in their careers.
In recent years, however, they’ve formed a friendship and mutual respect. That culminated in this week’s signing.
“He and I had a relationship over the years, and he’s a great guy, very encouraging. Obviously, like you said, we had our history but what happens on the field, stays on the field. And off the field, I think we have a very solid relationship, and I think we both thought it’d be really cool if we had an opportunity to play together at some point in time,” Sherman said.
