Athletes typically ooze with excitement when given the opportunity to compete in the Olympics. This year is different, though, and Rory McIlory isn’t excited.
The Tokyo Olympics won’t be the same experience as prior Olympics. COVID-related restrictions will prevent competitors from enjoying both the competition as well as the vacation-like experience. Not to mention, Olympic golf isn’t necessarily must-watch television, at least when compared to the other events.
In an interview on Monday, McIlory revealed he isn’t too excited about competing in the Tokyo Olympics.
“I don’t know if there’s much to look forward to,” McIlroy said on Monday, via Brendan Porath of Golf Digest. “It’s obviously going to be a very different environment. Looking forward to getting another week’s golf in and trying to get my game in shape. As I said, there’s not much else to do there.
“… I’m not a very patriotic guy. I’m doing it because I think it’s the right thing to do.”
Take a look.

This is an interesting insight into Rory McIlory’s motivation to play in the Olympics. It has nothing to do with his devotion to his country. So what’s his motivation for heading to Tokyo? It’s not clear.
He did mention that he’s looking forward to trying to improve his game. Perhaps he’s using Tokyo as an opportunity to try a few new things and continue practicing. Regardless, his comments shed new light on how many athletes probably feel about the upcoming Tokyo Olympics.
It won’t be the same, remarkable event athletes and the rest of the world have grown accustomed to, primarily because COVID-related restrictions.
